Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach in a 6-12 community school in the South Bronx with a lot of heart. We have been coping with the COVID-19 crisis the only way we know how: by coming together and fiercely supporting each other over the finish line. We've had many roadblocks along the way, and teachers and students have had to flex their problem-solving skills every step of the journey to make sure every student is learning. As we try to ensure student learning during these difficult times, we have been working overtime with struggling students, moving heaven and earth to make our lessons engaging and accessible.

The students at my school are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 crisis and have experienced learning loss over the pandemic.

Firstly, our population is almost entirely low-income Black and Latinx families, groups that are more likely to be essential workers, and disproportionately carry the burden of illness and death. Additionally, many of our students are English language learners and students with disabilities who struggle in particular with navigating classtime and are struggling to grow into independent learners. We have seen the effects of learning loss already and we need help turning the corner.

One of the easiest and most effective ways to mitigate this learning loss is through technology. It would be ideal if we could have an iPad in the classroom for flexible learning support. Students could use the iPad to access interactive learning platforms, watch videos, use text-to-speech read-aloud applications, and access easy on-the-spot translations. The size and weight of an iPad would make differentiation much easier than what we are doing now: passing around a bulky laptop that takes up a lot of space on the desk, or squinting to see the materials on their small phone screens.
