We Need an App for That!

My students need Amazon Fire Tablets to access digital books, apps and songs to support their social-emotional, math, language and literacy development.

My Students

My students are the absolute BEST! They are 3 and 4 year old children who are inquisitive, kind, entertaining, resourceful, and enthusiastic learners.

Most of my students are considered "at-risk" because they come from low income households.

"At-risk" children need ongoing instruction and support to succeed academically. There are 13 different home languages spoken among my students so not only are they navigating a new educational setting but they are doing so while learning a second language - English. ALL of my students are developing their oral language, literacy, math, science, physical and social-emotional skills so they can transition successfully into Kindergarten.

My Project

My classroom lacks technology and, in this digital age, it is an important medium from which children learn. During the preschool years, young children are developing a sense of initiative and creativity. My students are curious about the world around them and about learning. They are exploring their ability to create and communicate using a variety of media (crayons, felt-tip markers, paints and other art materials, blocks, dramatic play materials, miniature life figures) and through creative movement, singing, dancing, and using their bodies to represent ideas and experiences. Digital technologies provide one more outlet for them to demonstrate their creativity and learning.

By acquiring and loading the Amazon Fire tablets with high quality apps I will engage my students in a variety of math and literacy activities while differentiating for each child based on their ability and range of needs.

The tablets will serve as a starting point for guiding developmentally appropriate integration of digital tools in our classroom. I will implement a technology center and formally instruct children on the mechanics and features of the device. I will ask for parent volunteers to assist the children as they use the tablets to support and extend their learning. Volunteering will also benefit parents because they will become more knowledgeable about educational apps that they can install on their own phones which is a great way to connect classroom to the home.

I know young children need to run, play, color, draw, engage in conversations and hand-on activities to explore the world around them. The use of the tablets will be intentional and limited so children will continue to learn the way they learn best -through play.
