This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever listened to a story written by an author that was from a different culture? An author who uses children's imagination to take you on a journey as you read the book. Well, Allen Say has successfully done this to my students. They have fallen in love with his craft.
I teach an amazing group of students.
Our school is located in a high-need, low income community where English is NOT the dominant language. My students are very eager and excited to learn. They work very hard to acquire English and learn the academics of their native language. In the few first couples of months they have developed a love for reading. Just recently I read them a book by Allen Say and they have become interested in reading more books by him. I am up for the challenge but would love some assistance with supporting my students in learning more about this authors craft, message and purpose.
My Project
Allen Say is a Japanese author that focuses a lot on using our imagination, self belief and determination to accomplish our goals. His books are deeply family and feeling oriented. His books carry different messages for the reader. My students were exposed to one of his books and are eager to read more of them and learn from Allen Say's craft to become better readers and writers. My students will have connections to his books because many of them were immigrants and understand how it feels to be different. My students will learn many of life's lessons through reading, studying, comparing, and discussing the books written by Allen Say.
You donations to our request will allow us to have an author study about Allen Say in which we can analyze his books and understand life and its happenings a little better.
These books will also help my students understand the value of family, imagination, dreams, determination and that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and never ever give up.
