This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I havesixty of the most interesting fifth graders you will ever meet. They are funny, smart, caring, and sadly, struggling. Their lives are rough. Even so, they never give up and they keep trying. One group is an ICT classroom with many different learning disabilities and the other is a mixture of gen ed and ELLs.

Most students come to my class 2-3 grade levels behind in reading.

My job is to close this gap in their education before they go to middle school. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay for after school so they can have dinner as well. It is a rough neighborhood but the kids are not jaded. They are lovable and very worth the hard work and effort that goes into teaching at this type of school.

My Project

My students find reading difficult, so it is a necessity that I find high interest literature to share with them that is not just entertaining, but a good story.

I need to get them to see that reading isn't a task, it is an escape!

A Wrinkle in Time is an amazing example of a story that can hook a reader and make them not want to put the book down.

And with the teacher's guide, I can see multiple ways to transport them into this novel. Since Oprah is starring in the movie adaptation that is coming out in the spring, I want to share this novel with them before the movie comes out.

I want them to see that no matter what the movie is, the book is always 1000% better. I want them to love reading that much!
