My students will change the world. They tell me all the time. First, they have to learn how to read.
My kids here at my school are amazing.
Every single child pushes themselves to achieve their goals and overcome the obstacles they face. Still, overcoming will take a ton of work in this poverty stricken neighborhood. Their young lives are impacted by a community where gang violence, robberies, and dropping out are the norms. They've experienced more than I might ever experience. So we're just trying to push them past that to success. We're trying to help them want to go to college.
Our school has some fantastic teachers. We work extremely hard. This is our first year as a charter school and the kids came to us extremely behind (for my class, English was the major problem). We've taken them to a much higher level than they would have been at otherwise, but our classroom really needs this extra help to bolster their growth in Spanish.
My Project
This Spanish book collection is a fantastic start to what we need. I included all of the Dr. Seuss Spanish books in print. I also included a few other books that might catch the students' attentions. We have reading time for about 25-30 minutes a day, which is the main time that they would be using these books. It's a free reading time when they choose what to read. I'll also be able to use the books to teach short reading lessons and do some guided reading activities.
I really just think books would be great because it will give the students a renewed interesting in Spanish reading which is kind of lacking right now because they have literally read all of the books in our currently pathetic Spanish library.
I think the only other thing left to say is that this really will make a difference in my kids' lives.
Literacy is the key to their futures. If we can teach them how to read now, especially books that compel and interest them, then we can hook them for life so that they really will be able to achieve their dreams. Thank you.
