This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are enthusiastic English language learners that need a few tools to help them stay on track. 100% receive free lunch. They come to school full of enthusiasm, but they need even the most basic supplies, like pens, pencils, and notebooks. Many of them work after school to support their families.
Our school has a great track record of helping these students graduate with success; however, we have limited resources and do not always have the means to purchase essential tools and enhancements for our students to make them successful.
My Project
Students have expressed interest in starting a cooking club. While we do not have a kitchen of any kind, we can make due with a slow cooker. We would like to meet in the morning to learn how to prepare recipes, and then see and taste the results in the afternoon.
A slow cooker and paper towels will allow us to start our cooking club in a sanitary, safe way.
By learning to prepare their own meals, our students will be better equipped to engage in independent living at college and beyond. In so doing they will learn about nutrition and apply their math and literacy skills, all while having fun!
