What unit of study on the human body is complete without studying the skeletal system? The 7th grade science curriculum in NC includes a major unit on the human body ? and we'll spend several weeks studying the skeletal and muscular systems. One item that I believe is critical to this topic, but that I don't currently have access to would be a model of a human skeleton. We need a skeleton in our closet!!!
I am a 7th grade science teacher at Rogers-Herr Middle School in Durham, NC. Rogers-Herr has 630 students - a racially diverse group of learners from all socio-economic backgrounds. As a science teacher, my goals are to ignite my students' curiosity about science and the world around them and give them a solid ground across a wide range of scientific disciplines to help prepare them for the rigor of high school science courses.
In teaching science to middle school students, I've found that they are visual learners ? they need 3-D models they can see and touch in order to make sense of concepts - especially, things such as the inside of the human body, which they don't get to see! I plan to use the skeleton every day throughout the unit to help my students visualize the size and orientation of the bones and the movement of the joints. Please help me bring such an important learning tool to my students!
