My Students
Imagine being overwhelmed by what you see, what you hear, what you smell, and what you feel. Sometimes all at the same time. The students I am working with face these challenges on a daily basis along with the typical pressures of Middle School!
My students are adolescents that negotiate the challenges of emotional and behavioral disorders, attachment disorders, and autism spectrum disorders.
They attend a public middle school that is supportive of their needs...but can be overwhelming for them in terms of the demands placed on their ability to filter sensory information. They are unique and creative individuals that have unlimited potential to meet their goals and aspirations. However, they require some additional supports in their daily school lives to meet this potential.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of sensory related items that will support my students both as they are working in the classroom and taking a break from it's demands. These tools are designed to allow students access to a variety of tactile, vestibular, visual, and auditory sensory stimuli. These items well help my students to learn to regulate their own reactions to their environment in a manner that allows them independence as well as a positive and calming experience. We often take for granted our ability to manage our reactions to our environment. For many of students I am working with this is a skill that takes instruction for them to learn and practice for them to master. These tools will allow them to practice calming behaviors that will allow them to begin their journey towards high school and a more independent and positive life experience.
This project is so very important to the daily lives of the students in my classroom.
They often look for a variety of ways to provide them selves with either sensory input or a way to block some of that extraneous input out. At this time the number of options in my classroom to support them in these efforts are limited. With the sensory tools they will be able to have a variety of ways to get their basic sensory needs met so that they can continue with the very important business of learning.
