Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a public kindergarten through eighth grade public school in a high poverty urban community in New Jersey. They love music class and are great musicians. Even though we don't have a budget for new materials, we find creative ways to make music together.
Due to our enrollment, our kindergarten and first grade students attend school at a different location and I go into their classrooms to teach music, limiting what I can expose them to.
These students needs a set of rhythm instruments and other supplies that I can keep at their location so all students can play musical instruments during every music class.
My Project
These materials will make a difference to my students because currently I teach music in two locations and the vast majority of my supplies and instruments are kept in my music classroom, which only grades 2-8 have access to.
My kindergarten and first grade music classes are conducted when I travel to their building and go into their classroom.
Having rhythm instruments and other teaching tools permanently at this second site will enable me to engage these students more fully and lead to better sequential music education. While I often bring instruments to the k-1st grade site, I am limited by what I can carry. These kids deserve to have instruments in their hands every single music class.
