My Students
I am an AIS teacher located in New York City. I teach eager kindergarten, first, second, and third-grade children who are struggling readers and writers. My students are devoted to learning but need a different approach toward their education. They need small group instruction that uses many types of manipulatives.
When my children are successful, the look of wonder in their eyes is a sight to behold.
It is truly what makes being a teacher the best job in the world.
My Project
Last year, I was able to effectively encourage all my students to read. The solution was very simple. A reading rewards system that allowed my students to not only choose the book they would like to read but one that also let them own the book. It really just came down to having Amazon gift cards available. This year, it has become urgent to show my students how to escape into a book. It realizes stress and mental anguish and helps put any problems in prospective. Reading also teaches how to solve so many of our daily problems.
The thrill on a child’s face when they are able to go to the computer to “purchase” the book they have earned is priceless.
In order to earn a book, my students are required to read a certain amount of minutes. The side benefit to all the reading is they are raising their reading levels without realizing the hard work that is being done.
