This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Oak Ridge High School has a diverse population to include 48% black, 42% Hispanic, 6% white and 4% other ethnicities.
We are a Title I school with 100% of our students eligible for free or reduced lunch.
We have an enrollment of 2,807 students and last year we had a total of 89.6% of our students graduate in four years.
For many of our students, our school Media Center is their only source for books as well as technology and access to the internet. I am trying to expand the technology available to our students by creating a MakerSpace area where students can explore and expand their skills in science and technology.
My Project
Digital technology and learning is now standard in school libraries across the nation and play a key role in STEM education. Unfortunately, not all schools have the luxury to afford such elaborate setups in order to create a powerful hybrid space for STEM learning.
It is my goal to create a MakerSpace area within our school library media center where students have the opportunity to engage in STEM education and project-based learning.
"Maker education fosters curiosity, tinkering, and iterative learning, which in turn leads to better thinking through better questioning." It is my hope the MakerSpace will help students develop problem solving skills that they can apply to all phases of life and learning. I would love to have students come in and use the library not just for research and reading, but use it as a place where they can think, create, collaborate and grow in order to enrich their education.
The furniture items listed below will help us begin to make our MakerSpace vision become a reality!
