Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How can we better prepare students to be productive members of society? By exposing them to the current issues going on in the US and across the globe! My goal by the end of the 2014-15 school year is to have students talking with each other inside and outside the classroom about current events!
I teach a diverse group of students who live in the South Bronx.
Our school provides a very welcoming environment and has high expectations of all students. They're always excited to learn especially when they're learning about a topic that directly affects their lives. Having Scholastic Junior in our classroom will really help drive discussions that students are passionate about and get them thinking about possible solutions for the issues at hand.
My Project
My students are eager to learn not just what's written in a textbook but about the issues affecting their lives today. When you find the right topic, you'd be amazed at just how passionate kids can be about something. I want my students not to just hear about the news as they flip through the TV, but actually take an active interest in learning about what is going on in the world each day. With a subscription to Scholastic Junior my students will be exposed to interesting topics that will lead to discussions and debates.
Not only will my students become more informed about the issues affecting our world, but this subscription will also help students work on their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Having this magazine in our classroom will allow us to complete many different types of activities.
