This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach an amazing group of eighth-grade scholars who are motivated to learn, strive to be their best, and overcome the daily obstacles of living in low socioeconomic neighborhoods.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds; some are English Language Learners, some come from low-socioeconomic environments, and others have learning disabilities, both of which undergo struggles and when learning new concepts.
However, regardless of their differences, they work together in collaborative groups to challenge one another and strengthen each other's academic abilities.
My Project
The Outsiders is an ideal book for our English Language Arts (ELA) classroom. The novel is about a teenage boy who questions the social, political, and economical divisions of the society he's trapped in, and it is extremely engaging for students. The text is gripping, real, and honest. What is even more interesting and captivating is that The Outsiders, was actually written by a teenager dealing with truly difficult experiences, which many of our students can relate to personally.
The Outsiders is a great option for hooking kids who have defined themselves as non-readers because it is exciting, engaging, and they are able to relate to it.
This novel also invites students to discuss topics and issues that matter to our kids, for instance, the ways they define themselves, the range of social divisions going on around them, and the complexities of being a teenager.
If we are lucky enough to get The Outsiders added to our curriculum, it lends itself to SO MANY wonderful creative activities including integrating STEM projects!
