We Need a Graphic Novel About Real Friends!

My Students

My fourth grade students amaze me every day. Our school is located in Northeastern, Los Angeles county, and my students come to me from a variety of backgrounds. They are excited to learn, and they love to read. My students are athletes, martial artists, musicians, and painters. Around 32% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Being a small school with big ambitions, our teachers are always seeking ways to be creative, innovative, and engaging.

Fitting in at school, accepting others, feeling good about oneself, and having empathy for others - these are all very important to my fourth graders.

I want my students to feel great about themselves, and so I am requesting a class set of the graphic novel, Real Friends by Shannon Hale.

My Project

This year our school has focused on how to be a friend and put an end to bullying. I am requesting a class set of the graphic novel, Real Friends, by Shannon Hale.

This graphic novel takes place in an elementary school and focuses how hard it is to find real friends—and why it's worth the journey.

This book also deals with how friends might change alliances and learn how to deal with a bully. As the story develops, some of the characters need to learn to stand up for themselves and not allow bullies to boss others around. All of these details could happen at any school, so I know that this graphic novel will be a fantastic jumping off point for discussions and in-depth writing.

Some of my students struggle with reading so having this beautifully illustrated graphic novel will help motivate those readers to join in on the discussions about the plot and characters.
