This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are hard-working, passionate, and resilient young people who live in East Oakland. Despite facing a deluge of obstacles including poverty, homelessness, learning English, drugs, and violence, my students come to school each day excited to be a part of our school community. In our class, students are engaged in activities that help them to envision and build a better future for themselves and their community. Even though there are many systems in place working to lock these students into a hopeless cycle of failure, they continually bounce back by working hard to overcome challenges they face. In science class, my students get most excited about doing experiments. Their favorites last year included making an ecosystem bottle with an earthworm, discovering the properties of water by making ice from air, and making a balloon inflate using gases released by yeast.
My Project
One huge area of need for all middle school students is organization. I want to help my students learn organizational skills by guiding them as they create science notebooks. These notebooks will include their notes, homework, and reflections from class.
Using a document camera to guide students as they create science notebooks is essential because students can visualize the concepts they are learning about.
Additionally, when students see me working with them under the document camera, not just giving them directions, it encourages and motivates them to work as well. By learning how to arrange their science notebooks, students will be better equipped to be organized, independent workers in high school, college, and eventually the laboratory!
