Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help! We can't reach the board! My first graders need an accessible whiteboard to be able to read (and correct) the daily morning message, practice their printing, participate in shared writing, manipulate magnetic letters for phonics, and write number sentences.

I teach First Grade at a public school in California that serves a low income, high need community of English Language Learners.

Our mission is focused on closing the achievement gap and giving all students an equal opportunity to attend college and pursue their dreams. These twenty-four first graders love to be hands-on and show what they know!

My Project

This teaching easel is made especially for tiny humans so that they can reach the board and therefore interact in any lesson without struggle. With its wide whiteboard design, I can teach, write, and display pocket charts, posters, and big books. The easel is magnetic so we can use alphabet letters to form words during phonics. One side has permanent lines making it easy to do shared writing, where students help to write sentences on the board, or to demonstrate handwriting skills. A big book can be shared with students helping to point to the words as we read chorally. The wheels allow us to move the easel anywhere in the classroom.

Every morning, I write a message to my students with announcements, but also to practice our sight word spelling and the mechanics of writing (capitalization and punctuation).

I make it interactive by having them find certain words and correct mistakes they may find in the message. They will be thrilled to find that they won't need to go on their tiptoes to reach the board. I want my students to feel comfortable and welcome in their classroom, and this teaching easel is one crucial component.
