This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students had a chance for change last year and embraced it! We need the glass supplies to bring about new change for a new year with new opportunities!

I teach art to students grades K-8 at a Title I inner city school in Connecticut.

Each year, my students create several public art installations for our school and city communities. Throughout each year, my students participate in many art exhibitions, which have earned recognition as well as awards. My students take pride in seeing their hard work and creativity on display and enjoyed by all!

My Project

Last year, a group of 7th grade students participated in a state-wide art installation contest. These students exhibited behavioral and academic difficulties in school. The students learned how to cut, grind, and assemble stained glass to create their first place award winning piece! My students exceeded my expectations in their ability to design and construct their structure. I saw such excitement and enthusiasm in my student when they worked in this medium, something that I had never seen before! After seeing their success with glass as a medium, I want them to further enhance their artistic growth by introducing them to glass fusing and slumping. This is an opportunity that may never arise again and this skill will enable them to think critically and problem solve.

With budget cuts and material constraints, I find myself purchasing many materials with my own money and this is not always possible for me to do.

For last year's project, we used materials that I had left over from my college days. My students should have the same advantages as any other middle school student! My students have a talent for working with this medium, and after witnessing their success and pride in their accomplishments, they deserve this opportunity for further growth!
