We Measure Up in Science!

My students need scales and balances to quantify substances in Science class.

My Students

My students are the entirety of our school. I serve all the students at our school in the discipline of Science. My students come to me ready to learn, explore, and experiment to become critical thinkers.

Part of my school is Title 1, which means they come from high poverty and may not have access to materials and resources at home.

Part of my school is Magnet, which means their parents may not live close by, but have chosen to send their child here because of the opportunities and experiences they can be a part of at our school.

My Project

My students need tools to measure weight to show conservation of matter. My older students (3rd, 4th, and 5th graders) will use the digital scales to measure materials separately, then combine them to show that materials do not simply disappear when dissolved into another substance; they merely change form.

My younger students (K, 1st, and 2nd graders) will use the balances to show the different weights of varying substances, such as the difference between the weight of the air we breathe and carbon dioxide by blowing up a balloon with each type of gas and then weighing them on the scales.

My students will use their math skills and literacy skills while exploring Science concepts with the two different kinds of scales.
