This project is fully funded

Hi! I am a first grade teacher of all subjects in New York City. In our school we use the balanced literacy approach to learning. Every day we read aloud books by different authors. This exposes children to different authors' craft and style, while modeling fluent reading. I would like to allow my students to explore different writing techniques in collaborative study groups. By having the students focus on one specific author, they begin to jot down noteworthy features of the text and look closely at the craft and technique of a favorite author. In turn, the students begin to write and think like these renowned authors, such as Tomie dePaola. He has a wide range of picture books. If I had a variety of books by the same author, the students could rotate texts and have study groups and discussions about the author and their findings, and how they will apply this craft in their own writing. This is a wonderful literacy connection and the children have fun while learning crucial parts of writing and reading, such as character development, plot development, story elements, and language use. This type of interactive experience makes reading and writing real for the students. Authentic literature makes learning more personal for them. I have done author studies in the past, but usually I read the book aloud to the students and they have no active involvement. Having a variety of books will involve the students in the learning and exploration process. They will benefit greatly from having hands-on authentic literature and seeing the print up close. We would be extremely grateful if you could make our wish come true. My project needs 30 titles by by Tomie DePaola.
