My Students
The students in my classroom have a variety of learning needs. Many students learn better when there is movement involved. Movement can change the way that a child's brain is activated and therefore change the quality and quantity of what they learn.
My students spend the year learning, making friends and acquiring new skills.
We work independently, in small groups and as a class. My students come from a variety of backgrounds both economically and ethnically. They get involved in their own learning process and they love to make improvements. They try new things and work towards mastery. They are amazing!
My Project
Earlier this year I received 6 20-inch Hokki Stools as part of a Donor's Choose grant. My students think they are the best thing ever. All of my students want to use the stools. I have used them for small groups, I have handed them out to specific children for interventions and for rewards. I have a group of students from other second grade classes that come into my room daily. The first thing they look for is where they can sit and use a stool.
I am impressed with the quality and durability of the stools. I see my students' increased focus and attention while they are seated on the stools.
Unfortunately the 20-inch stools are too tall for some second grade students. With additional stools in the 15-inch size I would be able to let all students of various heights use the stools safely and benefit from their use.
By providing additional seating options I am hoping to help students who learn better through movement have opportunities to increase their learning.
This applies to special needs students as well general education students that focus better with movement. My students have been motivated by using the Hokki Stools as a reward for time on task and good behavior. With additional stools I will be able to reward more students daily.
