Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager to show everyone how much they have learned; However, they are not able to do so through a multiple choice test or essay writing that requires them to sit still for long periods of time. They are more comfortable moving around as they create a poster or take pictures to use along with their presentation.

My students are new comers from another country and struggling readers that come to the learning center on a daily basis to receive extra support in language development and reading.

Although they struggle to read independently, they enjoy read-alouds and shared readings where they are able to engage in rich discussions that lead towards making connection, partner sharing, retelling stories or sharing newly learned knowledge with their peers through different collaborative groupings

My Project

Last year, I worked with many ADHD students that were struggling academically and required redirection due to lack of attention.

One of them said to me, "Ms. can I sit on your chair?" (My chair spins!) Unfortunately, due to safety regulations, I was not able to let him sit on my chair, but it inspired me to look for a seating arrangement that would maximize student academic achievement for himself and other students with similar behavior while at the same time promoting physical fitness.

With Common Core, PE has been pushed aside !

This kid inspired project will not only promote academic achievement but will benefit physical fitness as students will be able to move around while staying focused on learning tasks. Students will meet and surpass the 60 minutes required of weekly PE.

The Hokki stools will make an enormous difference in the lives of my ADHD as they will learn and have fun burning calories while staying in their assigned seat.
