My Students

My students are faced with many challenges in and out of the classroom, but you wouldn’t know this by meeting them. They are inquisitive and constantly upbeat. Most of my students have faced more challenges in their short lifetime, than most people can imagine. Many of my students are faced with insecurities of where they may receive their next meal, or where they may have to move to next. It is in the classroom they are enabled to a life of security and consistency. There will be constant challenges in their life, but through education and knowledge they will be able to face any challenge with perseverance and determination.

My third grade class is capable and determined to succeed regardless of their predicament.

Many of my students are being raised in single parent households, or being supported by other family members. I have parents who are working two to three jobs to ensure their child’s needs are met. Most of my students receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. I know the challenges they may face are out of my hands and theirs, but I also know through education they will be able to dream for their future.

My Project

Third grade is a vitally important year in childhood development. This year I would like to focus on my students increasing sense of personal responsibility and place in their education and within their community. In order to do so I would like to motivate my students to love reading.Reading is key to the academic success of any child.Reading inspires children to dream and explore. Most of my students are unable to imagine their potential because they are unaware of what the world has to offer them.

I am asking for leveled readers to be able to start a reading book club in my class.

Currently, my school does not have a school library and my classroom library material is limited. Through the reading book club students, students will give book reviews and we will discuss different genres of books to build interest from all students. It is my goal that all of my students are reading books they are genuinely interested in. I am requesting fiction books for students searching for comedic relief, non-fiction books on historical figures for those with an inquisitive nature, and non-fiction informational text for students with an explorative mind.

Reading changed my life. It all started in third grade for me when my aunt introduced my to the Babysitter’s Club series. After that all I wanted to do was to read everything and anything. Through reading, I became a better student. I was able to explore different parts of the world and imagine what life in ancient Rome would be like.Reading allowed me to also achieve more in my life than I could have ever imagined. I want to do the same for my students. I want my students to learn that success is attained through effort and motivation.
