This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

After teaching for 20 years, I have learned that the best way to get kids to read is to give them books they are interested in reading. I like to keep many books in my classroom so that kids are surrounded by literature; this atmosphere fosters a culture of reading and literacy.

My students attend a diverse high school in an urban setting.

They have a variety of interests and backgrounds in terms of ethnicity, socioeconomic class, race, language, religion, and ability. They like challenges but sometimes need extra support to meet them. Some of my students are voracious readers, but others are reluctant at first. That's why having a variety of resources at my disposal is crucial. I have had many students change their minds about reading after being in my class, and that is the greatest success I could hope for.

My Project

My students must be reading a book at all times. Sometimes we read a book together, and they are available in our library. However, most of their reading involves personal and guided choices. We spend time reading in class silently, and they read outside of class each day. I am requesting a variety of books for my students. A few of the titles include "The Book Thief", "Monster", "Life of Pi", "Catching Fire", and "Looking for Alaska." These books offer them in-class reading and an opportunity to borrow books to take home.

I always tell my students my story about how, in high school, I chose a book to read because it was short, not realizing that I wasn't at all interested in the story—it became the longest book ever.

I beg my students not to make my same mistake. I need the ability to get to know a kid, reach for a book off my shelf and say, "I think you'll like this." Kids aren't always convinced until they sit with a book for awhile. My library is looking pretty sad and needs a makeover.
