My Students

I teach 4th and 5th grade special education at a turnaround school in a low-income area on the south side of Chicago.

Because I teach multiple grades, this will be my second year with many of my students. Throughout our first year together, I saw my kids develop a love for reading. They read as many books as they could. This frequent reading lead to major improvements in their reading levels, but, unfortunately, it also left them with very few unread books.

My Project

My students need a varied collection of books tailored to their individual interests to supplement our classroom library. If books that cater to their individual interests were added to our library, my students would have the opportunity to continue strengthening their newfound love for reading. They would have new, exciting texts to choose from during independent reading and other times throughout the day.

New books to add to our library would help my students continue to deepen their love for reading.

Additional interesting texts would motivate them to read even more, which would in turn help them to improve their reading skills. Adding books to our library would be a step in the right direction in terms of helping my students move closer to grade level performance and college readiness.
