I am the luckiest teacher in the world. I teach high school English in New York City to some of the most thoughtful, inspiring and intelligent teenagers I've ever met. The school is considered a high needs school and the students are extremely bright and motivated. They make my day so interesting. The class I need books for is a double-period literacy specific English class for 9th graders.
The students read independently everyday and they love it! That makes me so happy. The only problem is, they go through books so quickly. It's really not a problem, it's a blessing. However, I can't keep up with their requests for new materials. They love reading during their commute, at home and during lunch! Some of the students read one book per week!
I have requested books they have asked for, or books I have heard about that seem to fit their interests. Your generosity would keep their momentum going strong. They gain so much from reading books on their own. Independent reading improves vocabulary, comprehension and instills an overall appreciation for, and a life-long love of reading.
I am the first person to recognize the beauty of my troubles. I have students who love to read. Everyday, I am amazed by their dedication to books, magazines and newspapers. I want to provide every possibility for their love of reading to grow and your help would make that a reality.
