Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a young child growing up, my favorite thing to do was to go to my school library and pick out new books. My students are growing and learning in the same small, tight-knit, school community that inspired me to become a media specialist.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
As the school's media specialist, I encourage my students to develop a love of reading. One of my favorite things is when my students enter the library and inquire when the newest books, by their favorite authors will be added to the library and if they can be the first to check out these books. It makes my heart happy that there is a buzz about books in our school and an excitement for reading in and out of our school.
My Project
These books are the books that my students have been asking for, to enhance the print-rich library that I strive to create in my school. My library is a place that my students really enjoy coming to especially when its time to choose their weekly book for their reading homework. During instruction time I like to read to them on the carpet, however, after our lesson they like to pick a spot in the library to read independently. It is during this time I see my students love for books. Every book that comes into my library is treated with love and care, and my students are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of the books have been chosen with my students in mind, I have personally asked them what they would like to see in our library, and I have watched them the past few month of school read similar titles.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently, not only in the library, but at home as well and hopefully increase their reading levels.
This will also allow for my students to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these new books will continue to help my students grow into stronger in readers.
