I teach in an area where budget cuts have left classrooms with the bare minimum. I want to teach my students to genuinely enjoy reading, but purchasing classroom sets can be expensive. With a Kindle, I can eliminate the need for a class set by simply purchasing one book and project it on to my screen
My students are wonderful kids with a thirst for learning, and the desire to keep up with the cutting edge technology other schools in better neighborhoods enjoy.
Many of them do not have access to technology after school. Because we are title I Florida school, a good portion of our students stay after school in our enrichment program and by the time they leave, it is too late for them to go to the public library to check out books. Beyond that, the library is nearly becoming an ancient artifact due to all the technology that exists. When a great book is released that my students would enjoy reading, there is often a waiting list that is sometimes months long.
My Project
A kindle Fire HD is an e-reader that will allow my students to explore the world of books without the need for a large shelf of expensive books that will get lost or destroyed over time. There are many free books available on Kindle Fire that my students will enjoy, and we are unable to get those books in hard copy.
This project is important to me because I want my students to see that there is a whole new world available to them through books.
Oh the places their imagination can take them if they have the opportunity to get the new books that they so desperately want, such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries series.
