My Students

I truly believe that every book is a portal to a new and interesting journey. I hope that my students and I can go on numerous adventures through books this year. Our classroom is home to several amazing boys and girls that love to read. Getting our class to read is never a challenge. I often find my students anxious for another student to get through a book so that they can get their opportunity to read it as well. As a person who loves and owns a personal library with over three hundred books, this makes me very happy and excited.

I would like to provide these students with a means to read collaboratively and be able to bond with one another over a book and build strong relationships.

While my students love to read, I often have noticed that they repeat books quite often. I’m no stranger to re-reading books as I’ve read the Buford High Book series myself numerous times. I think they get caught up in the comfortability of reading what they know they’ll enjoy; I want to use this book club to broaden their reading.

My Project

Taylor Swift says it best “Books train your imagination to think big.” This was our thought process when we were deciding to begin our own book club. As an aftercare program we are not in charge of teaching all the literacy skills to our students, but we like to make it our mission to help our 3rd-5th graders building their reading competency, reading comprehension, and help to build them into more confident and deep thinking readers. This book club will also give our classroom the opportunity to bond over our love of books and discuss all the fun stories that we will read together. When I mentioned this idea to my students they were so excited and were so ready to begin.

Providing our students with fun and rich literary experiences will benefit them for the entirety of their lives.

My after-care program is a diverse community that services all ethnic backgrounds. Students come to us after a long and grueling day of school, where I like to have fun things for them to do. We think having a book club will be fun, stress free, and be such an educational benefit.
