Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is a barrier-free, Title I funded school, home to over 1,500 students, with over 70 languages spoken. My children are resilient, dedicated, and determined to overcome any obstacles to soar to new heights. I am in awe of their perseverance and how they strive to be the best possible. To say that I am proud to be their teacher is truly an understatement.

More than 90% of my children have a number of academic deficits that must be remediated for them to be successful.

Reading is the main curriculum area where my children struggle. However, this has impacted all other academic areas. In order to be successful, our students need to feel loved, appreciated, and confident in their abilities. Small group explicit instruction that meets their diverse and unique needs is paramount to their future success.

My goal this year is to foster a lifelong love of reading in my amazing students. The Orton-Gillingham Plus printable classroom collection of books will be used in our small group reading group to work on decoding CVC words. The Syllable Division printable books will help my students practice their decoding skills through reading stories and text that incorporates those words. The two comprehension book bundles will help my students read and build their skills in understanding what is being read to them. The Multi-syllabic packet has words that my small group can practice reading. Lastly, the morphology books will help them understand the meanings of words and help to build their vocabulary. These books will be a game changer for my small group book reading intervention groups.
