This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As an art teacher of K-4 inner city youngsters, I have the privilege of witnessing the rich creative energies of young children. Many of my students are impoverished (100% qualify for free lunch) and face enormous obstacles in their young lives. For many children, success in the art room is the only success that they experience during their school day. This is my second year here, and since the school lacked an art program for 21 years prior to last year, I am building up a program from scratch.

As my Principal's budget is stretched, keeping me on staff full-time took some maneuvering. It seems there is very little money for materials. I have purchased a few basic items and have appealed to colleagues for some basic donations, but beyond paper, crayons, scissors, glue and markers, we are lacking the "extras" such as paint.

My students are asking each time we meet: "Are we going to paint today?" When I tell them not today, they continue: "How about next week" Obviously, they are eager to move on to that wonderful, sensual experience with paint! I am asking a donor to consider contributing watercolor paint, brushes and watercolor paper. Watercolor is versatile and easy enough for all grade levels to work with.

You can be that special person that helps 500 deserving children realize their desire to paint! For a relatively small amount of money, I will be able to procure supplies that will enable every child in the school to paint and feel proud. I believe that artistic experiences benefit children educationally well beyond the art room--the cognitive and emotional engagement contributes to growth in all areas.
