My Students

My students are young musicians yearning for more musical knowledge. We are beginning our third year as a school, in the midst of a pandemic. As a choice school, my students come from all over the district to our school to integrate STEAM into their curriculum. We laid the foundation for our music education journey for the past two years! Now it is time to build upon their knowledge!

As a STEAM school, we integrate all subject levels.

Students make meaningful connections between music and what they are learning in reading, math, science, and social studies. We are constantly looking for new ways to connect across subjects and create hands-on, authentic experiences to learn, feel, and express concepts.

"Tell me, I forget; Show me, I remember; Involve me, I understand," said Carl Orff. Music education should be hands-on and authentic. I believe Carl Orff was a music educator before his time, advocating for a hands-on musical experience where students get to sing, play, and move. We strive to accomplish that with every music lesson at my school. Students leave my classroom having sung, played, and moved with smiles on their faces.

My Project

A Djembe with a stand is a great way for students to find success with drumming in my classroom! We use a lot of world music instruments and pieces in my classroom. When talking about traditional African music, we do not have a djembe at my school. We currently have some tubano drums and 1 djembe with a djembe stand. We would like to have as many authentic instruments as possible so students can experience musical cultures from around the globe!

This would pair well with the shekere, caxixi, and agogo bells that we currently have!

The stand will allow the students to play more successfully since many students have problems holding the djembe in the correct position without it. In addition, this would allow more students in a class to play together at the same time. We currently need to share the tubano and djembe for all students to have a turn. This has been extremely difficult due to COVID rules. We aren't allowed to share instruments without sanitizing them in between uses. So some students miss out on playing these amazing instruments.

I would love to have enough world drums so that ALL students can drum together. They absolutely LOVE to drum and it builds an amazing sense of community!
