My students need more books about art or related to art, to read in my classroom. I use these books as a starting point for more lessons. What better way to integrate literacy into art.

My Students
My students come to art class excited to expand their horizons, learn about art, and to create. I strive to treat them as if they are accomplished artists, and their work reflects this attitude.
Our school has a unique teaching model focusing on life-long learning, with multi-age classrooms and adult mentors.
Students master each learning benchmark before moving to the next level. Our school is part of a high-performing network of schools in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. Our students come from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. We receive free breakfast and lunch and school-wide Title I services.
My Project
I began a classroom library of art books in 2017 and now would like to expand it with more books. The students love them so much they want to finish their projects early so they can go read.
I love to use these books as a starting point for a lesson, whether it be about Van Gogh or about lines and color, it brings literacy into the art room.
Next time I teach weaving I will have two new books to use to show the students what weaving is: The Goat in the Rug and The Weaving Adventures of Edgar and Rita. What an exciting part of a lesson.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
