We Love Reading, Yes We Do!

Help me give my students the chance to read the new Nēnē Award Nominees and a shelf for organizing books on hold.

My Project

These books will allow our school to continue to participate in and vote for the Nēnē Award, Hawai'i's Children's Choice Book Award, which is an experience that has helped get students excited about reading for fun. This was the first year that the award and voting process was introduced to the students and I witnessed the nominated books for 2025 fly off the shelves. Even if their initial intention is to just participate in voting, this still gets many students to pick up quality books that they may not have chosen in the first place.

Students like the idea that their voices are going to be heard and it serves as a great opportunity to help them recognize the qualities of a good book.

Unfortunately, we did not receive the 2025 books until later in the year, so many students didn't have the time they needed to read enough of the books to make an informed choice when voting. We also only had about 7 of the 25 nominated books, which narrowed their selection. By purchasing these books now, students will get more time to read the books, tell their friends about it, and get excited for reading and voting. There was high demand for the 2025 nominated books, so having additional shelving this time around would allow for greater organization when students place holds on popular books.

We have many students that are already interested in reading, but in general, we currently lack books that will excite students or challenge them. I believe these books could do just that for many of our students. Reading for fun is incredibly important and foundational. It should be fostered, especially at the elementary school stage, so that students have the skills they need as they advance to middle school and beyond.
