My Students

Hands-on, Cooking in Kindergarten = FUN LEARNING! Help us educate our students about important life lessons and skills by making healthy food in our Kindergarten classroom! We will utilize a literacy-based approach to Nutrition that aligns with our school's teaching process for all subject areas.

We are a Title I, NYC Public School in Queens, where nearly 60% of our students qualify for free / reduced lunch.

As a successful Early Childhood School in New York City, we provide a nurturing, yet rigorous community of learning. Our Pre-K through Grade 3 Students are encouraged to think critically and explore through a hands-on, process–based curriculum. LITERACY IS INTEGRATED INTO ALL CURRICULUM AREAS. Our commitment to differentiated instruction supports Students of all ability levels in every classroom by integrating: ● English Language Learners (ELL students) ● ● English as a Second Language (ESL students)● ● Students with Special Needs ● ● General Education students ● Our community is quite international with almost 70% of our Students coming from homes where English is spoken as a second language. One-fifth of our Students receive extra support for learning English. We also provide communications to Parents in 4 home languages [English, Chinese, Spanish, Korean].

My Project

To teach our kids about Nutrition in an effective way that will keep them INTERESTED and INVOLVED, we are requesting (10) Books, Lakeshore Kid-sized Pitchers, Bowls, Rolling Pins, Cutters. Our Literacy-based approach includes BOOKS featuring the foods of many diverse cultures we have in our class and focuses on the critical concept of healthy eating [i.e. Good Enough to Eat]. We want to educate our students about the importance of a balanced diet and good nutrition, so these books will lead directly into HANDS-ON COOKING LESSONS in our Classroom to MAKE HEALTHY FOOD! Classroom cooking experiences will advance their learning in many ways: 1) unique, hands-on opportunities in our class - following written/verbal directions, measuring, counting, fine motor skill practice 2) critical early childhood education about nutritional choices, which students may then teach to their families 3) important life skills including working together to prepare recipes, teamwork, precision and patience

Collaborative projects like this are valuable for team-building and fostering a more integrated, learning community for our Kindergarten students.

They will gain confidence in their own ability to contribute and create healthy recipes in our classroom "kitchen." With your support and the generous efforts of FEED USA, we will educate our Kindergarten students about healthy eating. These lessons can have a positive impact for the rest of their lives. Let's learn WHY and HOW to cut the junk food!
