My Students

My students are all third-graders who live in a large city, and they attend a neighborhood public school. Our school, the teachers, and the parental/community involvement are outstanding. Like many other public school districts across the nation, we are currently being affected by major budget issues. To me, it is essential that my students have access to an updated, appropriately-leveled classroom library. Unfortunately, the budget cuts are affecting my ability to maintain that year after year.

This year, we have 45 eager third-grade readers who treat their books like gold!

Each student is an individual and requires personalized learning as much as possible, especially in this unchartered territory after a year and a half of remote/hybrid learning. They are eager to learn and discover and are always ready for a new challenge. With a large range of learners, I hope to expand my library with picture books and chapter books that focus on self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making, along with books that support our reading and writing curriculum. I hope you can help!

My Project

I am requesting a list of new books for our classroom library. The book titles in the Jennifer Serravallo reading and writing collections align directly with our school's literacy curriculum. Due to budget-related restrictions, it is rare that our school is able to purchase books that expand on our curriculum. The rest of the book titles on this list align with the specific social-emotional needs and interests of my students. Adding these books to our classroom library will truly strengthen our classroom community. If our class is able to receive these books, students will be able to build positive relationships with those around them. Students will also be able to build reading lives around books they love.

Students in my class absolutely love to read.

As their teacher, I want to be sure I support my students' social-emotional needs and their literacy growth. I also want to challenge them to think critically about their role in our classroom community, the way they interact with others, and their budding relationship with literature. Through the use of these texts, my students will begin to see themselves as strong and independent thinkers, no matter their reading level. We will use these materials to help foster the excitement of what it means to become life-long learners. Thank you for your help in supporting this important work!
