Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

People that visit my classroom have described it as a place where the kids are happy, are challenged, eagerly participate, feel safe to take academic risks, and are respected. A typical day is built on this environment where the kids learn with joy.

My students are a group of brilliant and hardworking sixth graders.

They are part of a dual language cohort that learns subjects in Spanish and in English. They are the founding cohort at our school and as such have been fearless trailblazers. They love a challenge and take a lot of pride in their work. They are avid readers and enjoy increasing their stamina, comprehension and academic discourse. They have a special community built on six years together in the dual language program that constantly shows respect and care for one another as learners and people.

My Project

The students will use the books in our reading workshop. The students will receive a standards based mini-lesson, a read aloud of the book, followed by an academic discussion to practice their reading strategies, and independent practice of the learning objective at the end. Examples of mini-lesson learning objectives include analyzing character actions and motivations, tracing the development of the plot, or evaluating the writer's craft. Reading strategies practiced in academic discussion include connecting, questioning, and predicting among others. Finally, the students will practice making and supporting claims.

Donations to this project will improve the classroom immensely.

Our school lacks classroom sets of quality books to support a reading workshop setting. Instead, we have textbooks that have short stories with a list of questions at the end. While short stories are important, the students also need to read a real book from start to end. This will allow them to engage the standards with a longer and more complex story, increase their stamina, and experience being a member of a community of literacy.
