My Students

Our class is comprised of eight amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.

Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.

Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.

My Project

My students need books and thematic manipulatives that can be used to meet their individualized goals for the school year. Throughout the year, our students read adapted books based around different themes. In our class, one of the most effective ways to extend what we have read during group readings is to interact with thematic items in hands-on experiences. This allows stories to become interactive rather than just passive. Our students continue to be engaged with the materials, even after we have finished reading. We hope to use the manipulatives during and after the reading of books to increase engagement and increasing learning. Some of the books we are requesting are "Bear Sees Colors", "Daylight Starlight Wildlife", and "Llama Llama Time to Share". The TOOBS such as the Halloween, farm, and insect themes will serve as the manipulatives requested.

Your generous donation to our project will improve our kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade self-contained autism classroom by building stronger receptive and expressive language, increasing focus and attention during instruction, and giving students access to a wide range of thematic stories.

This will change our students' lives for the better. They will be accessing new vocabulary and increasing their literacy skills, all while having fun learning!
