My Students

My students live in a high poverty area.

Many live in homeless shelters, with relatives, and in public housing. Many do not have access to books at home. The children love to be read to. It's important that they are exposed to quality literature. May students are also second language learners. Reading to them will expose them not only to a good story, but to new vocabulary words.

My Project

These books will be read during large group time. Having a big book to read makes it easier for children to follow along, and keeps their attention. The books will also be available to read during choice time in our book area. My students have a few big books in our class now. They are definitely a favorite. It's a nice way for 2 or 3 students to "read" a book together.

Student's learn a lot from the illustrations, especially ELL students.

ELL students often rely on the pictures to help them understand the content. These big books will make it easier and more engaging for the students.
