This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle school is a year full of transitions physically, emotionally, and academically. They are a bundle of contradictions. One second they cannot live without you and the next they can push you away. It is a year where classroom engagement can disappear. The middle school is located in a rural area outside of the city. Most kids are on a free or reduced-price lunch plan. They come from a multitude of backgrounds, ethnicity and needs. The community is lower to middle class and families move out here because housing is a little cheaper. Students have a wide range of abilities. The school values inclusion and some student have some very special needs. Many students are on medication for behavior issues, while others are learning coping strategies. Regardless of where they come from, they have one thing in common... the are struggling readers who need support and resources.

My Project

These amazing books will help our classroom get started with book clubs formerly knows as literature circles. These are books that will promote a love for literature and a positive attitude towards reading. Book clubs give students a shared reading experience where the students are the facilitators. These texts will promote students thinking as they process and express perspectives and opinions. It will also expand a students ability to express ideas orally using academic language and vocabulary. Establishing good reading habits is critical in developing life long learners and lovers of literature.
