Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember how you felt when you say Rocky run up the library steps? It was his spirit and the music that made it all seem possible. We need an iPod to bring that same feeling to our Physical Education classes.
Our students are super kids who dream big and attend school of nearly 1000 students in an urban setting.
Our school population is one where 98% of the families qualify for free or reduced school lunch. Our school has a special emphasis on fitness as a key to supporting learning. Even though we have been faced with a 17% budget cuts, we have a Morning Program that emphasizes physical activity for students in grades 4 and 5. There is daily lunch time recess in all kinds of weather. The children have an opportunity be part of lunch clubs many of which have movement and fitness as the theme.
The children speak many languages at home but are fluent in the language of play at school.
My Project
Music is an important key to motivating our students to get involved in our Physical Education classes. The Itsy-Bitsy Spider, The Wheels on the Bus become class favorites and make it a language rich experience for our younger students while support both fine and gross motor development.
The students have the ability to believe that they can truly excel in your workout when listening to The Eye of the Tiger or John Williams and the Boston Pops Star War Theme is amazing. The students look forward to these themes among many.
Alas, CD recordings are expensive and wear out after frequent use. An iPod affords us an seamless use of music to motivate the children.
Having an iPod to use in Physical Education class is an important weapon to inspire our students in the fight against childhood obesity.
A varied musical selection makes it easy to get up and get going. It is the beginning of dreams and aspirations to reach new heights and personal bests.
