This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with a lovely group of 8-9 year olds in an densely populated urban neighborhood outside of Los Angeles. Our school is located in an area of extreme poverty where 100% of our students qualify for free lunch.
No matter how tough their circumstances, these children are filled with enthusiasm and joy.
They are eager to learn and see each new lesson as an adventure. One of the great pleasures of my life is coming up with new ways to engage their minds and give them experiences that will help them understand the world around them and find their place in it.

My Project
My students live in a densely populated urban city that is filled to the brim with fast food restaurants, AND has the dubious distinction of having the highest percentage of children suffering from obesity.
There are very few public spaces for the children to play in, and even bike riding and skateboarding are curtailed due to a complete lack of safe areas in which to use them. With so much of their lives being sedentary, and with so few safe places for them to play in, I wanted to find a way to give them both new skills and new fun equipment that can be used to get them up and moving, even in limited outdoor space.
I realized that hula hoops, soft balls, and new play equipment would be the perfect antidote for our problem!
I had tried to use hula hoops in the past, but our school only has 12 small ones, which made it difficult to use with an entire class, and there were kids in my class that were just too big to fit and move inside the small hoops. I also found out that far too many of the children had difficulty catching and throwing balls, and were afraid of getting hit. The softi balls are specially made be easy to throw and catch, and they hurt far less when a stray ball lands on one of the students. I'm also asking for cones and poles in order to encourage them to run and jump. These new hula hoops, balls and playground equipment will keep our PE time engaging and exciting. I am positive all they will be instrumental in helping us get up, get outside and play!
