My Students
Do you remember having a music class or chorus when you were a kid in school? Remember looking forward to singing some of your favorite songs? It I am a dance and movement teacher and we need an iPod to store our music. My cd player is outdated and a lot of the Cd's are scratched!
My students are all special needs.
Many of them are on the autism spectrum. The songs we sing in the movement and dance class help them to increase language. Many of them use language for the first time through song. The movement activities help them to become aware of where their bodies are in space. The music brings language, physical activity and joy to their day. Our school is in a large city with a very diverse population.
My Project
The iPod and wireless speaker will be used to enhance the movement and dance program. We start with singing and warm ups. We do a lot of marching and dancing. We celebrate holidays through song and movement! The movement program enhances their communication and social skills. Music and movement motivates them and they often look forward to my class.
Movement and dance activities not only help with physical development, but also enhance cognitive, language, social and metacognitive skills.
Autistic students have great difficulty in socializing and communicating with their peers. Utilizing dance and movement in the classroom helps them to develop some of these skills and break through the communication barrier.
