Take a moment to imagine your life without books. This is the battle I am fighting. My students have no library at school and no safe passage to a public library. Help me introduce them to the love of reading by giving them books they can connect with that also challenge them.
My students are learners, but they have been deprived of the opportunity to have easy access to books.
The violence in the neighborhood does not allow them to go to the library freely without fear. They are all college-bound in spite of this speed bump. They all have dreams of becoming lawyers, doctors, and psychologists. They are kids who happen to live in a poor, violent neighborhood. They do not, however, allow this to define them. They define themselves by their dreams, their intelligence, their morality, and their persistence.
My Project
Each week, my students are given 30 full minutes to read a book of their choosing. The classroom is silent for those 30 minutes to allow students to truly engage with the books. At the end of a month, students get together to talk about their books and their similar themes, characters, and conflicts and to recommend the books to someone in the class. Their excitement is contagious! My students need books to improve their comprehension and analysis skills and introduce them to the love of reading.
The donations will allow students to have more of a choice in the books they read.
The books I have chosen are books that students can truly relate to and see themselves in. They not only can learn the benefits of becoming a lifelong reader, but they also can learn how to handle difficult situations and cope for the better.
