This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is located in an area of low economic development. Over 90% of our students are growing up in poverty. Books and resources are scarce in their homes. But they come to school every day eager to learn and to apply their new skills.
In Kindergarten we are laying the foundation for all future skills!
Every day we are learning letters and sounds that will help us read. We are learning to count and graph, which will begin their understanding of math skills. All our activities are hands-on letting the student discover and discuss as they are learning.
My students are not growing up with the same experiences their counterparts in the wealthier parts of town are privy to. When they walk in the first day of school they are still learning how to write their names, the letters of the alphabet. We work very hard to get these students reading, writing and adding on grade level. The problem is we need hands-on resources and books to get them there. They need to practice their skills on a daily basis in order to become successful.
My Project
Teaching Kindergarten, one of the main goals we have is to get students excited about reading books. We are hoping to inspire students to enjoy reading. In order to do this, we need to have exciting stories to share with them. I also believe that students should see themselves in the books we read together. Stories should represent all cultures.
My favorite part of the day is when we read together!
I love when the students gather around and we share the experience of learning through books. Most of our writing activities are a response to the titles we read. The students get so excited to pull a familiar story from the library and read it with their friends as well.
My students also need books to check out and take home to read with their families. My kiddos love sharing the adventures of their favorite characters at home and reading together is one of the best ways for students to learn fluency and comprehension skills.
