My students are the forgotten, the ignored, the unfortunate. The school has no library, so the teachers must supply them with options as the neighborhood library is too dangerous to get to on any given day. They come from a neighborhood in Chicago where guns are more common than books; however, they have dreams, big dreams.
They dream of college and careers.
They dream of briefcases and polished shoes. They dream of a savings account and success. My students can be successful, but they have not reached their full potential and won't without a basic necessity: books.
My Project
These particular book titles appeal to my current students who are in need of daily reading. They are much into sport and horror books, so that is what I've tried to include on this list. Every Wednesday, my students get to sit quietly and read a book of their choosing from my library. Since we don't have a school library, this is it. For the most part, they also cannot get to their neighborhood library as it's too dangerous at any time of day. We need these books to keep them reading! The books help students to connect, to heal, to imagine, to dream. Things that they don't get to do when they are fighting the streets.
