This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have students who volunteer every year to participate in an after school book club--for fun! Can you imagine? Students who want to read and discuss quality literature. We have a contest that our district sponsors, each year we get a new list of books to read.

Our students are bright, funny, hard-working and gracious.

Many of them are in our bilingual program, as English is not their first language. We are located in an area of low economic development, however, they do not let that stop them from having big dreams! The after-school book club that I run has two different groups. One is for students Kindergarten through 2nd Grade and the other is 3rd-5th Grade. Some students are avid readers, some attend because they want to get better at reading. Through this club we make sure they have books that can be checked out and read every single week.

My Project

These books will be very well-read! At the end of the year many are dog-eared or missing a book jacket-but that means the book was read and re-read! The students meet once a week to share their opinions of the books they have read as well as check out a new book to read. We do enter a competition that the district sponsors and end up taking teams to identify books by their quotes. It's such a wonderful experience for them in working together!

Everyone is cutting funds these days in education-we are no exception.

Without this donation, we may not be able to have our book club this year-can't have a book club without books. If you could see them walking out after a meeting-30+ kiddos with their noses in books, you would see the difference it can make. They love discovering new authors and new characters. These books would truly enrich the lives and education of our students. Thank you!
