Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse group that is driven, dedicated, and above all else hard-working. These students understand that in order to succeed in debate, there is a high level of demand of their time, dedication, and effort both during school and after hours.

Our school is a Title I campus, meaning more than half the students receive free or reduced lunch.

The poverty rate is high in the surrounding area, but our students are a strong group of outstanding kids who do not allow any circumstance to hold them back. During the 2017-2018 school year, our campus and students were directly impacted by multiple events; one of which was Hurricane Harvey. Despite this terrible storm, my students were able to pull together, overcome adversity, and have one of the most successful debate seasons in recent years!

Over the past two years, our team has more than doubled in size and is still continuing to grow. This season I had 2 DISTRICT CHAMPIONS, 3 students advance to Regional, and a state qualifier. In an effort to meet the needs of a growing team, I am seeking assistance for the Speech & Debate program!

My Project

Hurricane Harvey was a devastating storm with real world impacts, however, we did not allow that storm to stand in our way of achieving our goals. Our school is the center of the community for our area, both the school and community greatly impacted by Harvey. Through support and joint efforts both have done a phenomenal job overcoming unexpected adversity this year and is still making strives in recovery. It is my job as a teacher and coach to ensure that students are set up for success through my guidance and equipped with all materials to better set them up for success.

Each book gives my students extra time to read, prep, and practice which puts them one step closer to achieving their goals of success.

Speech is a wonderful performance based event that allows students to shine without the pressure of performing in front of a full auditorium. Speech competition that requires students to read, interpret the authors works, adapt to academic situations, develop social skills, as well as developed a skill set that will allow them to be successful in their educational and professional careers.

This project will allow our growing program to expand to new events giving students more opportunities to compete, excel, and provide more scholarship opportunities. Having multiple books this yearly in the year gives students the best opportunity to find the right work of literature for each of them to become familiar with and excel at competitions throughout the year.
