Help me give my students a place to explore and create using sensory materials!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Doennig's classroom raised $339

My Students
The students in my classroom are part of the largest elementary school in our district. Most come from single income, multi generational homes where they are often not exposed to literacy and math concepts before starting kindergarten. Poverty is high with approximately seventy percent of our students are on free or reduced price lunches. The two schools that were combined to create this school were completely destroyed in the 2011 F-5 tornado, with the majority of our students losing their homes. School is their "safe place".
My kiddos are excited about learning, inquisitive, knowledge seeking and questioning every minute of every day.
They seek the when, the why and especially the how continually, and I try my best to satisfy that curiosity.
My Project
My students love to explore and find creative ways to express themselves. One way we do that in our classroom is through the use of a sensory tub. Each month, students experience different kinds of materials, such as colored rice and letters to build their names, husking dried corn on the cob to work on fine motor skills and measuring capacity and water to determine an object's buoyancy.
My students learn best from hands on, open ended activities.
This station is a favorite during our Oral Language centers.
Currently, we are using a large plastic storage container, which limits my student's mobility and is hard to move around when full. With the purchase of a free standing, portable sensory table, my students will be able to stand up or kneel next to the table while exploring.
