it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This proposal is to have a FOSS "Levers and Pulleys" science kit made available for my third through fifth grade students science lab. The best way to learn about Levers and Pulleys is to actually work with the materials as opposed to looking at worksheets or videos of others performing the experiment. Our school has always done a magnificent job of having science materials available for our students in school. However, we do not have such a kit on our campus or the funds to be able to provide a class set of these kits for each class. I am requesting one kit for the 15 science lab classes that I teach.
I teach at a Title 1 school where 90% or more of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and these materials will have an immediate impact on the lives of our students. Our fifth grade students take the TAKS test and this test allows our students to show how much they have learned throughout their elementary school years. This is an all-encompassing test.
However, since our students do not have access to much needed science materials through their whole elementary school career, they have a hard time truly understanding all aspects of the science curriculum. While the fifth grade classes have access to our school science materials as they need them, other classes only have access to materials after the fifth grade classes have used them. If all of our students could have access to these very important kits throughout their time in third grade as well as fourth grade, they would be better able to understand these very important concepts when they get to fifth grade. If this proposal is funded these materials will be available to all classes so each child will have access to these materials.
