My Students

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Benjamin Franklin

Walking into my room you will find many different things taking place at one time.

I strongly believe that children learn by doing. I try to provide an environment where my little ones all feel that they can be successful learning and doing new things. I have 24 little ones that are very diverse in backgrounds and abilities but they are all energetic, creative and love to learn by doing things. As a result my room is a controlled, creative chaos at times with special pockets for quiet reading, writing and thinking. It is a privilege to be their teacher and provide a place they feel safe and loved. One of my sweet children told me on Friday, "Mrs. R, we sure are fabulous. We are the smartest." I hope to give them this foundation so this feeling lasts the next 11 years in school.

My Project

Our curriculum has a six week unit teaching children about their role as community members making decisions on how to use available goods and services. My goal is to make this unit as fun and engaging as possible. I have requested books that children want to read and are a variety of levels so all my children are reached. To help motivate them to read, I have requested puppets of community helpers that provide services. Children that are often reluctant to read will become motivated when using a puppet. I believe that learning occurs more easily when a child is doing an activity. This project will allow me to provide the opportunity for the child to become a consumer using goods and services. I will give each child an allowance of play money to spend on goods I bring to the classroom. I have requested magnetic money to model how to spend money and receive change. My hope is that they will have personal experiences to write about that they did not previously have.

School is supposed to be fun and enjoyable, especially for a six year old.

If children have positive experiences at the beginning of their school career, make wonderful memories, they will hopefully be motivated to stay in school. Unfortunately, the drop out rate is higher than average in my neighborhood. I am hoping to reduce this by fostering a love of learning in my little ones.
